Green Cards Are The Place To Start

You’ve heard lots of talk about getting a Green Card. Here is some background information about Green Cards to start answering your questions.

What is a Green Card?

A Green Card is a card you receive when you become an official permanent resident in the United States. This card is a permit allowing you, as a non-citizen, to live and work in the U.S. Plus, you can qualify for American citizenship once you have a Green Card for 3 to 5 years.
Each year, the U.S. government issues over a million Green Cards. Most are to family members of U.S. citizens and people who already have Green Cards. People from other countries looking for work is the next biggest group of Green Card recipients.
Take a look at our Green Cards FAQ to learn more about Green Cards.

FAQ

Green Cards FAQ

It takes anywhere from 10-38 months, depending on the type of Green Card you’re applying for and where you’re applying from.

Applying From Within The United States:

The wait is fairly short, 13 months on average as of April, 2022, for spouses and immediate relatives like parents and minor children of U.S. citizens.

For the spouses of U.S. Green Card holders, other relatives, and Employment-Based Green Cards, the waiting time can be much longer, often over two years.

Applying For A Green Card From Outside The U.S.:

For spouses and immediate relatives like parents and minor children, applying from outside the U.S. using consular processing, shortens the wait to 4-6 months. Note: COVID-19 has created severe delays. Other Green Card categories that are subject to country caps have various wait times.

There are many categories of Green Cards. Please read our article that explains the most common types of Green Cards.
